K-12 Behavior Support Specialist

Behavior support is available to your district as a service provided by Northcentral Arkansas Education Service Cooperative (NAESC) and the Arkansas Department of Education - Special Education Unit! As the K-12 Behavior Support Specialist, I am available to provide your district with technical assistance for students currently receiving special education services, as well as those students in the referral process. Roles of the K-12 Behavior Support Specialist may include the following:

  • review student files;
  • interview school staff, parent(s), and/or student;
  • observe student in various settings;
  • collaborate with school team in identification of students qualifying under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) disability category of Autism Spectrum Disorder;
  • provide recommendations for referred student;
  • assist, if needed, in conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA);
  • assist in determining whether the FBA warrants a Behavioral Intervention Plan;
  • assist in the development of a Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP), if the FBA warrants such;
  • assist in the development of appropriate classroom behavioral strategies such as behavior contracts, token-economy systems, crisis plan, etc., if the FBA does not warrant the development of a Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP);
  • assist with program development for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder;
  • review student progress and provide feedback;         
  • provide professional development as needed to address student or staff needs;
  • utilize the train-the-trainer model with the liaison.
